Support SHU Women's Rugby Alumni, Friends, and Family Campaign!
About Our Campaign
As proud members of the Sacred Heart University Women’s Rugby program, we are actively participating in a campaign to raise critical funds for our program, which serves as a yearly team effort. This year our team is striving to raise a total of $10,000 in 30 days – so I am kindly asking you to make a gift in support of SHU Women’s Rugby today!
The Women’s Rugby program can’t thank everyone enough for their support last season, from our 2016-17 fundraising campaign to our Pioneer 7’s Tournament, team awards, and alumni banquet (we’re already looking forward to welcoming all of you back for round two of our event this upcoming spring!) Last year’s fundraising dollars were instrumental in the overall success of our program. The gifts you contributed went towards facilitating the Pioneers 7’s Tournament including meals and drinks for all teams who participated along with a trophy, securing the banquet hall for our team awards and alumni banquet, trophies for team awards, tournament t-shirts, pint glasses with our team logo, and yearly team bonding activities such as our trip to Cinch in Fairfield where our team participated in an Iron Chef competition! With that said, each contribution that is made has a positive and direct impact on both me and my teammates and for that we thank you.
This year, your gift will help ensure that our program has the necessary resources to compete at the Division I level. Your gift will also enable our coaching staff to subsidize various costs associated with our 2017-18 Pioneer 7’s Tournament (food/t-shirts), our alumni game (official’s fees/t-shirts/jerseys), our team awards and alumni banquet (hall rental/catering/trophies/awards), and additional travel experiences, like treating our whole team to an event or activity when we are on the road. Your gift will also allow our team to participate in team bonding experiences such as broomball ($300/rink rental) and The Mystery Room ($20/student-athlete). We have an additional team goal this season to purchase at least one moving tackle bag ($8,500/bag) that will help our team immensely with various skills training opportunities, one 10x15 tent to set up at games, branded with our Women’s Rugby logo ($500-$1,000/tent) and one high-quality 4k drone ($5,000 with accessories) that will assist us in video analysis at practice and games and will allow us to capture the action from all angles. The drone will truly help us find those small margins to give us an advantage against our opponents. We can’t thank you enough for your consideration in helping us fundraise for these items!
About Our Team
This season we have a special opportunity to build on last season’s success. In 2016-17, we had our first home 7’s tournament where we beat Yale followed by Fairfield University (twice!) to win the trophy. Adding to our on-field accomplishments, we had two honorable mentions for All-Americans in Emily Mignogni and Margaret Woods. We went on to graduate four seniors from our program, three from the original club team and one who started from day one of the transition to Division I. Academically, we went from a fall GPA of 3.13 to a spring GPA of 3.47, which was an exciting jump and really sets our team standard academically going into the 2017-18 year. Additionally, Wealth Continuum Group committed to selecting one Women’s Rugby student-athlete a year to award a trophy and provide monetary scholarship to aid in the purchase of textbooks. It was a great year all around!
As I’m sure you can tell, we’re excited to watch our team flourish this season. For starters, the returning student-athletes have come back understanding the demands of the program with a desire to help take our team to next level. With our talented incoming class, we know that taking our team to the next level is something we can achieve. We’re excited to harness our team’s immense talent combined with the most important aspect of a team, character. This season our coaches feel that they have put together a team of student-athletes that will play for each other. We are continuing to build a team culture of “earn everything” and “respect” and this group of student-athletes in particular has the ability to set that tone and make it the foundation of our program for years to come. Watching our whole team come together as one unit is something that we are excited about and we hope you are, too!
On behalf of our student-athletes, coaches, and administrators, thank you so much for your generosity and support of SHU Women’s Rugby. We hope to see you this upcoming season at a game, team event, or both!
