Send SHU Students to Help Texas after Hurricane Harvey!
On August 25th, Category 4 Hurricane Harvey made landfall near the Texas Gulf Coast, devastating the area with massive wind gusts, storm surges, and flooding. In response to this widespread damage, Sacred Heart University students will be traveling to the Houston area in January to serve the communities most in need. With your support, we will be able to send SHU students for the first annual trip to Houston, Texas to assist with rebuilding efforts.
Your donation will off-set participation costs for a 20-member SHU volunteer team that includes 17 SHU student and 3 SHU staff advisors. Our projected budget to cover travel expenses, lodging, meals and other student trip expenses is $17,850. We have engaged in various student-driven fundraising activities during the fall semester that have raised an incredible $11,900. We are asking for your help to close the $5,950 funding gap.
About Our Trip
We have partnered with Community Collaborations International (CCI), an organization that has a proven track record of organizing teams of volunteers from universities and colleges all over the country and placing them in service sites with contractors and local community developers. Our efforts will embrace a holistic approach to community recovery; in addition to home repair, SHU student volunteers will also be assisting with local community organizations, such as food banks and after school programs, that have suffered direct impact from the flood.
Sacred Heart University will be one of the first universities to send volunteers to the Houston area; therefore, this trip will not only give our SHU volunteer team the opportunity to physically serve those in need, but also advocate for affected communities as the media attention turns elsewhere. At the heart of our University, our core values recognize the dignity and worth of every human being and promote the common good of society. Our partnership with CCI and our upcoming service trip are keys ways in which we live out our identity as a Catholic institution in tradition and spirit.
If We Exceed Our Goal
If we exceed our fundraising goal for the 2018 trip to Houston, Texas, all proceeds will carry over to fund a 2019 Volunteer Programs Service project.
