SHU Baseball Friends and Family Campaign
ABOUT OUR CAMPAIGN
2018 marks a new era in Sacred Heart University baseball and we can’t wait to get started. After the retirement of the legendary Head Coach Nick Giaquinto who led the program for 29 years, first year Head Coach Nick Restaino (4th year at SHU) takes over the program with long time assistant coach Wayne Mazzoni being elevated to full time assistant. In addition, assistant coach TK Kiernan (4th year) moves up from volunteer with new volunteer assistant coach Matt Burns rounding out the staff. The program has reached the conference championship game in 8 of the last 9 years with NCAA Regional appearances in 2006 (Georgia Regional), 2011 (Clemson Regional, 2012 (NC State Regional) and 2015 (TCU Regional).
This year our program opens February 23rd at Norfolk State University playing against Stony Brook, Norfolk State, and Iona. The following week the team travels to Louisiana and Georgia for spring break. The schedule for the ten-day trip includes Southeast Louisiana, LSU, Toledo, Nichols State for two, and a three game series vs. Kennesaw State. Other exciting trips include the Philly Bash (LaSalle, Villanova, and St. Joes), a series at Monmouth (w/ UMaine), and weekday games vs. UConn, Yale, URI, Fairfield, Albany, Hartford, and Army (where former Pioneer John Murphy is an assistant coach). The NEC schedule includes 28 games and opens on March 23rd.
2017 was a special year as the team sent Coach G off with a magical start and finish. The team traveled for the first time to Hawaii (picture above) for spring break to play a four game set vs. The University of Hawaii. The season ended with three season saving wins vs. LIU to make the playoffs. As the four seed, we beat the Bryant, the #1 seed, in the opening round behind the strong pitching of Brent Teller (Miami, FL) and Baylor Sundahl (Maryville, TN). Before losing to Central CT in the finals, Sacred Heart beat Wagner in a 12 inning nail biting, walk-off win with James Taubl (New Haven, CT) throwing 7 innings in relief.
The summer featured many highlights as players had excellent seasons showcased by Teller and Sundahl making the NECBL all-star team (New Bedford Bay Sox and Danbury Westerners) and then getting called up to the Cape Cod League (Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox and Bourne Braves).
On July 29th 2013 graduate Troy Scriber made his major league debut (getting the win in relief) with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. To read a story written by Coach Mazzoni about Troy in the New England Baseball Journal, click here. Pioneer Nation is proud of Troy!
HARBOR YARD NO MORE
The 2017 season for the Bridgeport Bluefish was their last one at Harbor Yard and the venue will no longer be used for baseball.
In preparation for this Coach Restaino led the significant upgrade of the team's practice field. Many improvements were made to the game and bullpen mounds, home plate, infield clay, and outfield grass. We united as a team to make the improvements to the field.
